Question
What is the importance of betrothal for marital success?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Betrothal or proposal means asking the woman or her guardian for her hand in marriage. Its importance is that it represents the first step towards marriage, since marriage cannot take place without the approval and acceptance of the concerned parties and this happens through betrothal.
Betrothal has no special rituals. It is enough for the suitor or his agent to propose to the woman’s guardian and ask him to marry her to him. If the guardian and the woman accept, then the betrothal is completed.
