An unauthentic narration about the Rock of Jerusalem
Fatwa No: 107025

Question

1-Can you give me a Sahih Hadith about what happened during the night of Isra' and Mi'raj?
2-Did the rock inside the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem try to follow the Prophet (PBUH) during his ascension or is it a man-made fabrication?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

We have already issued Fataawa 85636 and 87678 quoting some Prophetic narrations about the story of Al-Israa' (the night of Ascension), so please refer to them.

As regards the story of the ascension of the stone with the Prophet then the scholars stated that this has no foundation and it is only a rumor. No scholar has ever attributed this to the Prophet . Moreover, the Muslims at the time of the rightly guided caliphs and at the time of Mu’aawiyyah and the generations that came after him did not glorify that stone or go to it even though it was displayed. It is only at the time of ‘Abdul-Malik ibn Marwaan that people started to glorify it.

Therefore, that stone has no confirmed excellence in any Prophetic narration, as stated by some scholars, like Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Al-Qayyim and no authentic narration was reported in its regard.

Allaah Knows best.
