Question

Assalmu Alaikum What is the meaning of ILLALLAH. if it has a good meaning then is it permissible to chant this word as Dhikr. people in our society (Bangladesh) people often chant it. please clarify...

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

This word (‘Illa Allaah’ which means except Allaah) on its own does not have a correct meaning without mentioning the thing from which the exclusion is being made; therefore, it is not acceptable for this term to be a mention of Allaah. There is no evidence which proves that it is considered as a mention of Allaah and we do not know any scholar from the Salaf (righteous predecessors) who used to mention Allaah with this term, so it is not permissible use it as a mention of Allaah. However, it is confirmed in the Sunnah that the Prophet said: “The best mention of Allaah is ‘Laa Ilaaha Illa Allaah (None has the right to be worshipped but Allaah), and the best supplication is ‘Alhamdu Lillaah (Praise be to Allaah)’.”

Indeed, the best guidance is that of the Prophet .

Allaah Knows best.
