Fatwa No: 122303

Question

Is it allowed to pray Shafe3 and witr in jama3a? I pray 3esha in the masjid and when I go home I pray the shafe3 and witr in jama3a with my wife Jahran (aloud), so at least she can have 27 X the deeds like it is in Fard with jama3a.
Jazakum ALLAH khayra.
Salam 3alaykom

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

In principle, the Witr and other voluntary prayers should be performed individually. It is, however, permissible to perform them in congregation without taking it as a custom. This is because the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, did both things, but in most cases he performed the voluntary prayers individually. Please refer to Fatwa 81929.

However, it is permissible if you sometimes pray the Witr in congregation with your wife, but you should not do that on a regular basis, since a group of scholars mentioned that performing voluntary prayers regularly in congregation is a disliked religious innovation.

Moreover, the scholars said that a Muslim obtains twenty seven rewards when he performs the obligatory, not the voluntary, prayers in congregation, although some other scholars said that this also applies to the voluntary prayers.

Allaah Knows best.
