Fatwa No: 150019

Question

Assalamu Alaykum, Did Jesus pbuh ever change water into wine as the bible states? Was wine ever allowed in his era? Thank you

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

We have already issued Fatwa 90449 clarifying that the Gospels that exist today are forged, so one cannot rely on them and they are not considered as a reference. Besides, there is nothing in our religion that suggests that ‘Eesa (Jesus) changed water into wine.

It appears from the statements of those who spoke about the corruption of Christianity that the Jewish Paul was the first who brought into Christianity that wine and pig are lawful. Hence, this was not in the Gospel that was revealed to ‘Eesa .

It is confirmed that wine is forbidden in the Quran which is the Book of Allaah which was the last revealed Book that abrogated everything that contradicted it in all the previous Books. Allaah Says (what means): {Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine.}[Quran 5:3] Allaah also Says (what means): {O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allaah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.}[Quran 5:90]

Allaah Knows best.
