Building a mosque on behalf of a dead mother
Fatwa No: 161883

Question

As a continuous charity on behalf of my late mother, can we construct a masjid on her behalf? If not can we donate funds to re-construct or renovate a masjid ? Will the rewards of this good deed be the same for constructing new masjid and renovation of a masjid?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Every act of worship whose reward is granted to the deceased will benefit him/her, Allaah willing; and there is no difference of opinion among the scholars over the fact that the deceased benefits from the reward of charity that is granted to him/her.

Besides, building mosques and reconstructing them are among the greatest forms of charity from which the deceased benefits, Allaah willing. Indeed, it is a continuous charity whose benefit returns upon the one on whose behalf it was granted, as long as its benefit exists.

So, there is no blame on you to give in charity on behalf of your late mother for building or renovating a mosque; though the people's need for building a new mosque is more than for renovating an already built mosque.

Allaah Knows best.
