Allah Accepts the Repentance of Whoever Repents No Matter How Huge the Sin Is
Fatwa No: 1882

Question

Would Allah accept the repentance of someone who has caught AIDS because of committing immorality?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Allah forgives any sin, no matter how huge it is, provided that the one who did it repents. Allah forgives His slaves out of His mercy and generosity. Allah Almighty says (what means): {Say, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” And return [in repentance] to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes upon you; then you will not be helped.} [Quran 39: 53 – 54]

Abu Moosa narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “Allah stretches out His Hand during the night so that the people may repent of the faults that they committed during the day. He stretches out His Hand during the day so that the people may repent of the faults that they committed during the night. He will continue to accept repentance until the sun rises in the west (i.e. on the Day of Resurrection.” [Muslim]

That said, you should turn to Allah in true repentance and regret the negligence that you committed in the past. If you do this, then Allah will replace your bad deeds with good ones. Allah, the Almighty, says (what means): {And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty. Multiplied for him is the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein humiliated – except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.} [Quran 25: 68 – 70]

Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, “Allah accepts one’s repentance as long as the sun has not risen in the west.” [Muslim] Ibn ‘Umar and his father, quoted the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, as saying, “Allah accepts one’s repentance as long as he has not yet suffered the agonies of death.” [At-Tirmithi: good]

Allah knows best.
