Fatwa No: 199027

Question

I asked u guys earlier about Salah Isharq and u had directed me to various fatwas regarding it but I am really sorry I didn't understand those properly so here I am writing it again. I am writing what is my understanding for Salah Ishraq Please let me know whether I am right or wrong.. After Fajr prayer one must be sitting at the same place and read Quran and remember Allah swt till the sunrise(so in my country its 7:10 am) then after 15 min of sunrise one should offer 2 rakhas as Salah Ishraq. Its sawab is equal to one Hajj. Plz let me know if the above thing is correct or not?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Sitting in Al-Musalla (i.e. place of prayer) after performing Fajr prayer till the rising of the sun is not something obligatory but recommended. The way that our dear questioner stated regarding sitting in Al-Musalla till 15 minutes after the rising of the sun and offering two Rak‘ahs is something recommended and we hope that Allaah will grant the one who does that the reward of a Hajj. That is because Anas narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “Whoever prays the Fajr prayer in congregation and then he remains sitting mentioning Allaah until the sun rises, and then he prays two Rak’ahs, will receive the reward of one Hajj and one ‘Umrah. The narrator said: the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said ''Complete, complete, complete" [At-Tirmithi - Al-Albaani graded it Hasan (good)]

According to some scholars, a woman also gets the stated reward if she performed dawn prayer in congregation in her house and sat in her Musalla till the rising of the sun and offered two Rak‘ahs. Ibn Baaz said: "The same thing applies to the woman if she sits in her Musalla after offering dawn prayer, remembering Allaah The Almighty or reciting Quran till the rising of the sun and then offers two Rak‘ahs, then she will get that reward stated in the Ahaadeeth, i.e. Allaah The Almighty will grant the one who does that the reward of perfect Hajj and ‘Umrah."

That prayer is called the two Rak‘ahs of Ishraaq. It is the beginning of the Dhuha (forenoon) prayer according to many scholars. Al-‘Atheem Abaadi said in Tuhfat Al-Ahwathi: "That prayer is called Al-Ishraaq, and it is the beginning of Dhuha prayer."

Ar-Ramli Ash-Shaafi‘i said in his Fataawa: "The reliable opinion (i.e. of the Shaafi‘i School) is that Ishraaq prayer is the Dhuha prayer."
