Fatwa No: 278722

Question

It is in our custom to present gold coins or gold ornaments for the couples first new born baby (regardless boy or a girl),since for me its a boy baby as my gynaec said (in sha Allah ),can i refuse their gold gifts as it is forbidden for boys to wear gold or should i accept the gift and sell it or use it for different purpose ??

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

If the gifts are for the child’s mother, then it is permissible for you to accept them and benefit from them. If they are for the child, it is also permissible for you to accept them without giving them to him to wear because of him being a male. His guardian (father) may also sell them for him and use the sum for anything useful to him, such as clothes, food and so forth, or save the sum for him; or the mother can save it for him until he reaches maturity so that he can use them for anything that is permissible.
