Question

I saw a woman on television claiming that she is pregnant and carrying the Mahdi; is she telling the truth?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

The Mahdi can be known only through the signs that are mentioned in the prophetic Hadeeths and he will be known only after his emergence. Therefore, the claims made by some women that they are expecting Mahdi are false and nonsensical.

Following are some of the Hadeeths that mention the Mahdi :

On the authority of ‘Abdullaah ibn Mas‘ood the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, stated that the Hour will not come until one of his household assumes the caliphate, and whose name will be like the name of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and his father’s name will be like the name of the Prophet’s, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, father’s name. He will spread justice in the earth after it becomes full of injustice. [Ahmad; Abu Daawood].
On the authority of Umm Salamah the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, stated that the Mahdi will descend from Faatimah . [Abu Daawood]

Our belief in the emergence of Mahdi calls for exerting effort, not laziness. Many people despair of changing the negative reality, stop calling others to the way of Allaah, abandon enjoining good and forbidding evil, and wait for the emergence of the Mahdi to bring about change. Such passivity is the result of misunderstanding the Sharee‘ah texts. A Muslim is required to exert effort, and the best evidence for this is the saying of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, who said that if the Hour comes while someone has a palm seedling in his hand, he should plant it if he can. [Ahmad]

Allaah Knows best.
