Using keratin on hair and its effect on ablution and Ghusl
Fatwa No: 358795

Question

Is hair keratin halal? Does it affect ablution for prayer or the Ghusl (ritual bath) after the monthly menstruation? Thank you.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

It is permissible to use the mentioned substance, keratin, if it is free from impure ingredients such as alcohol, pork fat, or similar impurities. The basic principle is that all substances are lawful and ritually pure unless proven otherwise. This substance does not affect the validity of prayer, ablution, and Ghusl as long as it is pure, unless it forms an insulating layer that prevents water from reaching the hair. If it forms such a layer, then it must be removed before ablution and Ghusl so that the water reaches the hair. Please refer to fatwa 93058.

Allah knows best.
