Fatwa No: 3976

Question

What is the meaning of the supplication that is to be said after the Athaan “'Allaahumma Rabba hathihid-Da‘wati-taammah, wassalaatil Qaa’imah…?”

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Jaabir, may Allaah Be Pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "Whoever says upon hearing the call to prayer:

Allaahumma Rabba hathihid-Da‘wati-taammah, wassalatil Qaa’imah aati Muhammadan al waseelata wal fadheelah, wab‘ath-hu maqaaman mahmoodan allathi wa‘ad-tah,' he would be granted my intercession on the Day of Judgment.”

(O Allaah! Lord of this perfect call and of the prayer to begin, Grant Muhammad Al-Waseelah and Al-Fadheelah and Raise him to the praised station which You have promised him)." [Al-Musnad, Saheeh Al-Bukhari and others]

The intended meaning of the perfect call is the call of monotheism that is free from change or alteration and which is not mixed with Shirk (polytheism) since the words of the Athaan include these meanings.

The prayer to begin is the known prayer being called for.

Al-Waseelah here is the highest rank in Paradise. ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Amr narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "Then supplicate Allaah to give me Al-Waseelah, which is a rank in Paradise fitting for only one of the servants of Allaah, and I hope that I may be that one. Whoever asks that I be given Al-Waseelah, will be worthy of my intercession." [Muslim]

Al-Fadheelah is a superior status over all creatures.

The praised station is the station for which people praise him on the Day of Judgment which is intercession as explained by the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.

Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah Be Pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, was asked about the verse in which Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station} [Quran17:79] So, he said that it refers to intercession. [At-Tirmithi] Anas, may Allaah Be Pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "When it would be the Day of Judgment, some of the people would rush to one another in bewilderment. They would come to Aadam and say: Intercede (with your Lord) for your progeny. He would say: I am not fit to do this, but go to Ibraabeem …till they reach Jesus, and he would say: I am not fit to do this; you better go to Muhammad. They would come to me, and I would say: I am in a position to do that, I would go and ask the permission of my Lord and it would be granted to me." [Muslim] Allaah The Exalted Addressed His Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, Saying (what means): {it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station.} [Quran 17:79]

Allaah Knows best.
