Question

Assalamu ‘alaikum. Scholars say that Allah has face. But I want to know that, is it permissible for a Muslim to believe that Allah has only one face? I asked the question because I believe that Allah is not like us.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Allah, The Exalted, informs us in His Book that He has a Face, and so did His Prophet in the Sunnah. It is sufficient for you to believe in what is stated in the Quran and Sunnah, that Allah, The Exalted, has a Face that befits His Majesty and Greatness, and that there is nothing like unto Him. You should avoid such pointless and hair-splitting questions. Allah, The Exalted, Says (what means): {Everyone upon the earth will perish, and there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.} [Quran 55:26-27] Moreover, it was narrated on the authority of Jaabir that he said: “When the verse (which means): {Say, He is the [One] Able to send upon you affliction from above you...} [Quran 6:65] was revealed, the Messenger of Allah said: ‘I seek refuge with Your Face (from that punishment).’ And when he recited the rest of the verse: {…or from beneath your feet}, he said: ‘I seek refuge with Your Face...’” [Al-Bukhari]

In his book Aqaaweel Ath-Thiqaat Fi Ta’weel Al-Asmaa’ wa As-Sifaat wa Al-Ayaat Al-Muhkamaat wa Al-Mushtabihaat, Al-Karmi said: “The belief of the righteous predecessors was that the Face of Allah is an established attribute that was affirmed in the Sahree‘ah texts, and therefore, it must be accepted and affirmed.” [End of quote]

Allah Knows best.
