No Da’wah while wine is served
Fatwa No: 43422

Question

I live with non-Muslims (Christians). I sit with them and talk to them about Islam. It is their habit to drink wine while eating. Should I sit and eat with them so as to tell them about Islam? Or what should I do? Please advise me. May Allaah reward you well.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

First of all, we ask Allaah The Almighty to reward you for your zeal to calling others to Allaah The Exalted. We also ask Him to support you and grant you success in your effort to spread this great religion. Rejoice at the glad tidings brought by the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, for he, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, told Ali that if he was the cause for guiding a single person to follow the true religion of Islam, it would be better for him than possessing the best of this life's wealth. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Nevertheless, you should avoid inviting them to Islam and sitting with them for the purpose of Da‘wah while they are drinking wine and eating pork. You have to choose other times when they are not doing this. The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, warned the one who believes in Allaah and The Last Day from sitting at a table where wine is being served. [Ahmad]

Allaah Knows best.
