Question

I'm searching about the method of Abu-al-Waleed-al-bajee-al-Undulusi in his popular book al-Muntaqa Sharhi-al-Muwatta Lil -al-Imaam Malik so I need some information about that book do u know that it has any editing or revision or not?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Abul-Waleed al-Baaji mentioned in the introduction of his book: 'al-Muntaqa' that he had already fully explained Imam Maalik's book 'al-Muwatta`. He added that he gathered - in that explanation - a lot of interesting and beneficial matters. He said that he called it Al-Istifa`. But it was difficult to benefit from that book except for the very knowledgeable people (scholars). So, he abridged it for students and beginners in his book called al-Muntaqa. He explained, in his introduction, the method he used in this book and which can be summarized in the following points:

·    He omitted the names of the people in the Hadeeth chain.

·    He mentioned the Hadeeth and its explanation.

·    He mentioned the appropriate Fiqh ramifications relative to that Hadeeth.

·    He considered the sayings of eminent scholars as evidence, above all, the greater Maaliki scholars.

It is observed that he explained the Hadeeth from all its sides starting with the language explanation, following that by quotations from eminent scholars –mostly Maaliki ones. He also gave the opinion of the majority of scholars.

Finally, we did not find any edited or revised edition of this book.

Allah Knows best.
