The ten men given the glad tidings of Paradise
Fatwa No: 87708

Question

I want to ask you about the ten blessed men in heaven: what are their names and the proof in books with the Prophetic sayings in relation to this?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds.  I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The persons who were well-known amongst the people as being given the glad tidings of entering Paradise are mentioned in the Hadeeth (narration) reported by Abu Daawood, At-Tirmithi, An-Nasaa’i and Al-Haakim . The narration was by Sa’eed ibn Zayd directly from the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, that, “Ten people will be among the people of Paradise: Abu Bakr is in Paradise, ‘Umar is in Paradise, ‘Uthmaan, ‘Ali, Az-Zubayr, Talhah, Abdur-Rahmaan, Abu ‘Ubaydah and Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqaas.” He (Sa’eed) mentioned these nine names and did not mention the tenth. So the people told him, “We implore you by Allaah, who is the tenth, O Abul-Aawar?” He replied, “You implored me by Allaah, Abul-Aawar is in Paradise.”

At-Tirmithi said, “Abul-Aawar is Sa’eed ibn Zayd.” Al-Albaani said, “This Hadeeth is sound.”

It is confirmed in authentic narrations in Saheeh Al-Bukhari and other books of Hadeeth that other people were mentioned as having been given glad tidings of Paradise, including Sa’d ibn Mu'aath, Bilaal, Khadeejah, Ibraaheem – the son of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam – Umm Sulaym, and Haarithah ibn Suraaqah, may Allaah pleased with them all.

Allaah Knows best.
