Fatwa No: 90357

Question

Is it permissible to recite Du'aa from the Quran in Rukoo' and Sujood? For example, the Du'aa's in Quran 2:287-286.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

There is no objection in supplicating using the verses of the Quran that contain supplications provided one should not intend the recitation of the Quran, rather he should intend supplicating Allaah. All the Jurists have agreed that the recitation of the Quran whilst bowing or prostrating is dislikable. Ibn 'Abbaas reported that the Prophet said: "I have been forbidden to recite the Quran in the state of bowing and prostration. So whilst bowing, extol the Lord in it, and while you are in prostration strive your hardest supplicating, as it is most likely that you will be responded to." [Muslim]

Imaam Al-Zayla'ee wrote in his book 'Tabyeen Al-Haqaa'eq', 'The four Imaams have agreed that reciting Quran whilst bowing or prostrating is dislikable.'

Imaam Al-Qayloobi, a Shaafi'ee scholar said: 'Reciting Quran in the prayer other than the time of standing is dislikeable if one intends the recitation of the Quran.'

Imaam Al-Saawi a Maaliki scholar said: 'Recitation of Quran whilst bowing or prostrating is dislikeable except if one intends supplication in prostration.'

It is proved in a narration of the Prophet that supplicating whilst bowing is allowed. 'Aa'ishah said: "The Prophet used to say in his bowing and prostrations, "Subhaanaka-Allaahummah Rabbanaa wa-bihamdika Allaahumma-ighfirli. (How perfect You are O Allaah, our Lord, and I praise You.  O Allaah, forgive me)." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Imaam Ibn Hajar quoted from Imaam Ibn Daqeeq Al-'Eed both: 'It is deduced from the narration that supplicating whilst bowing is also allowed.'

Allaah Knows best.
