Question:

Alsalamu Alaykom, It is mentioned in the holy Quran that there is a christian sect that worship Jesus and Mary as two gods beside God. Does this sect still exist? Thank you

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

It is quite evident to everyone that the Christians used to take ‘Eesa (Jesus) may Allaah exalt his mention and his mother Maryam (Mary), may Allaah exalt her mention, as two gods besides Allaah   [this started several years after the death of ‘Eesa may Allaah exalt his mention and does not apply to his followers during his life] This applies to the Christians of today as well; some of them openly express this using different terms.

Acts of worship are a number of words and actions that are dedicated to Allaah, and whoever dedicates them to anyone else besides Allaah, has indeed taken another god with Allaah, even if the person who does so does not really claim that this creature is his god.

Therefore, what some Christians claim today that they believe in one God and that they are not the ones referred to in the Quran, and their claim that what is mentioned is about a disbelieving sect in the pre-Islamic era of ignorance and it has nothing to do with the Christians; all these claims are nothing but arrogance and it has no sound foundation.
