Fasting Six Days of Shawwaal and Combining Intention for Missed Days of Ramadan

Question:

In one of the previous Ramadans I did my "qadaa" with " ستة شوال" and I combined my niyah, that was BEFORE I KNEW THAT IT IS HARAM. I already did my " qadaa" for this year. And if I need to do qadaa (which I doubt), I am not sure for how many Ramadans I did it since as I have stated before I didnt know it is haram and what I heard is that it is allowed, so do I need to do qadaa of these also, or for none?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We hope that your liability was cleared by the fasting you observed as long as you held the intention of Qadhaa’ (making up for the missed obligatory fast days), even if you combined the intention of Qadhaa’ with that of fasting the six days of Shawwaal. This fasting counts as Qadhaa’ for Ramadan (and your liability is cleared from the obligation in this regard). Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen may Allaah have mercy upon him was asked: “A woman fasted Qadhaa’ for the missed fast days of Ramadan in the month of Shawwal, combining the intention of fasting the six days of Shawwaal with Qadhaa’, is her fasting valid according to her combined intention in this case?

He replied: “This means that she combined the intention of Qadhaa’ and voluntary fasting on the same day, which is invalid. Her fasting counts as Qadhaa’ only, because fasting the six days of Shawwaal should be observed after fasting Qadhaa’ of Ramadhaan.” [End of quote]

We have previously issued several Fataawa regarding combining the intentions of fasting the six days of Shawwaal and that of Qadhaa’.

Since you also write to us in Arabic, we refer you to Fatwa 128903.

Allah Knows best.
