Fixing the jaws and removing a mole or acne from the face
Fatwa No: 119685

Question

I'm sorry i forgot to include this in my original email. But i just wanted to also say that while reading some of the other replies, i noticed the answers were often somewhat contradictory. I do not mean to be insulting but i just wanted more clarification.
Another person asked if it is ok to fix their jaw and make it normal. They also asked if it is ok for their friend to have 2 moles and blemishes removed from their face. You stated that this is ok because it is an abnormality and not natural. But how are moles an abnormality and not natural? The same goes for blemishes and acne in general. If it occurs naturally, then is it not a sin to try and fix it?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

The details about the ruling of cosmetic surgery which we mentioned in the previous Fatwa, whether or not the defect is an abnormality, includes what you called fixing one’s jaw to make it look normal if this is abnormal.

The existence of a mole or acne and the like is considered as something additional to the creation of man, so removing it is seeking treatment. In this case, even though it naturally grows, there is no religious impediment in removing it even if it does not constitute a deformation to the creation of man.

Allaah Knows best.
