Consequences of cheating in this world and in the Hereafter
Fatwa No: 131330

Question

Salam aleikum,
I wonder, if we are cheated (for example, somebody says he will fix or produce something for a certain price but later -after payment- it becomes clear that he didn't do it well), are we supposed to try to get our rights (good quality product) through arguing etc. or accept having been cheated? Will we benefit from their cheating us on Yom al Qiamah?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

If a person concludes a contract with a worker to repair something or produce something with some particular features, and then it became evident that the repair or the production was not done according to the agreement in the contract, then this person has the right to ask the worker to fulfil what they agreed upon or to only pay him according to the work he did; for more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 116433.

On the other hand, if a person is cheated in this worldly life and he was patient with it, then he has a right on the Day of Judgment which he will get from the person who was unjust to him. It is confirmed that the Prophet said: "No calamity befalls a Muslim but that Allaah Expiates some of his sins because of it, even if it is a prick he receives from a thorn." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Allaah Knows best.
