Question

Assalamualikum, Hope you are well. I am practicing meditation named as 'quantum method'( www.quantummethod.org), very popular in Bangladesh. I am benefited in different ways like stress reduction, increased self confidence by meditation . We are taught to visualize what we want in life.It is said that we can achieve our dreams if we can believe it truly and visualize properly. I believe you know it better than me these techniques of mediation such methods usually apply. Another aspect of this meditation method is that after practicing mediation for few months we are taught to recite repeatedly the word "Allah" as dhikir. This practice is described as the way of spiritual development in this method. My question, is it permissible in Islam to practice meditation and visualization for achieving some worldly thing?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

We do not deny the importance of pondering over the universe and how wonderful its creation is, and the importance of being optimistic and the role of all this in psychological relief and in removing the effects of stress and anxiety. As regards what is mentioned in such a site and other similar sites that claim to apply quantum therapy, then first of all it is based on many claims that are not supported by authentic evidence, among which is what is mentioned here that we can achieve our dreams if we believe that it is a reality and if we visualize it properly.

Moreover, what is mentioned here, like repeating the word ‘Allaah’ is just to give legitimacy to such acts. Also, mentioning Allaah by repeating the word ‘Allaah’ is a religious innovation which is rejected and it is a wording mistake and a language mistake as well. It is confirmed that the Prophet said: “Whoever introduces into this matter of ours (Islam) that which is not par of it, it will be rejected." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Therefore, a Muslim should be careful about such sites. Indeed, there are many lawful ways of treatment and they are sufficient for him to keep away from falsehood and its people. Ibn Mas’ood narrated that the Prophet said: “Indeed, Allaah has not sent down a disease except that He has sent down a cure for it; some people know it and some do not know it.” [Ahmad]

Allaah Knows best.
