Fatwa No: 145951

Question

What gifts were given to Fatimah on her marriage from Muhammad (PBUH)?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

There are many narrations about the items that the Prophet gifted Faatimah when she got married with ‘Ali . For instance, Ibn ‘Abbaas narrated, “When the Prophet married off Faatimah to ‘Ali, among the items that he gifted her were a bed embellished with ribbon, a leather pillow filled with palm-tree fiber and a water-skin.” [An-Nasaa’i]

Abu Nu’aym reported the above narration in "Hilyatul-Awliyaa’" with the following addition, “…and a copper bowl containing Aqit (dry cottage cheese).” Moreover, Ibn Hibbaan reported that ‘Ali said, “The Prophet prepared Faatimah for marriage with a Khameelah (a white woolen dress), a leather pillow stuffed with palm-tree fiber.”

From the above narrations, we can conclude that the Prophet gifted Faatimah a bed, a dress, a pillow, a water-skin and a bowl containing some Aqit.

Allaah Knows best.
