Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

It was reported that some Salaf (righteous predecessors) used to write some verses of the Quran on a dish and then they would shake it with water, and the ink would mix with water, and then the sick person would drink it as a means of treatment.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said: “Some Salaf did so; they would write (some Quran verses) for the sick person either on a paper that would be put in water and then the water would be drunk by him, or rather it would be written with saffron in a dish or bowl and then they would shake the water in this bowl and then the sick person would drink it, and the patient benefits from it, Allaah willing.”

However, we do not consider it permissible to engrave verses of the Quran on a dish in a permanent manner because that writing will not disappear or mix with water, and the dish may fall or be subjected to humiliation, or food may be put in it, or that it can be subjected to putting some dirty things in it or on it or with it; there is no doubt that all this is contrary to glorifying the Book of Allaah, and this is not permissible.

This is regarding the ruling on engraving verses of the Quran on a dish, as regards drinking from a dish that is engraved with verses of the Quran, then it appears that this is permissible.

Allaah Knows best.
