Question

As-Salamu Alaykum..Should we say Thumma Ameen( summa) after saying Ameen ?? I dint read any hadith on saying Summa Ameen. But I use say thumma ameen, if I hear anyone saying Ameen after Dua'. Please guide me on whether to use or not to use Thumma Ameen.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

It is not recommended to repeat ‘Aameen by saying “Thumma ‘Aameen” or any other phrase after ‘Aameen in supplication, because this is not proven from the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. But ‘Aameen may be repeated when supplication is repeated, based on the Hadeeth narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah that once the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, ascended the pulpit and said: “‘Aameen! ‘Aameen! ‘Aameen!” It was said to him: “O Messenger of Allaah! You did not use to do so. “On that he said: “Jibreel (Gabriel) said to me: “May Allaah disgrace (or Far from the Mercy of Allaah is) a servant upon whom the month of Ramadan came and he was not forgiven.” I said: “‘Aameen.” He then said: “May Allaah disgrace (or Far from the Mercy of Allaah is) a servant whose both parents or one of them attained old age in his life and they did not cause him to enter Paradise (due to his kindness to them).” I said: “‘Aameen.” He then said: “May Allaah disgrace (or Far from the Mercy of Allaah is) a servant in whose presence you were mentioned and he did not invoke Allaah's blessing on you.” I said: “‘Aameen.” [Ibn Khuzaymah - Al-Albaani graded it Saheeh (sound)]

However, some scholars are of the opinion that it is recommended to say “‘Aameen” thrice after Al-Faatihah and supplication. The Fiqh Encyclopedia, in a subchapter on repeating ‘Aameen and adding some words after it, reads: Al-Kurdi quoted Ibn Hajar as saying that it is recommended to repeat “‘Aameen” in prayer, using as evidence the narration of Waa’il ibn Hujr in which he said: “I saw the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, commencing the prayer, and when he finished reciting Al-Faatihah, he said: “‘Aameen” thrice.” This Hadeeth is evidence that it is permissible to repeat “’Aameen” thrice even in prayer.

But, the chain of narrators of this Hadeeth includes Muhammad ibn ‘Uthmaan ibn Abi Shaybah, about whom Al-Albaani said: “He is debatable. Some of them (scholars of Hadeeth) even regarded him as a liar. That is why Ath-Thahabi classified him among the weak and abandoned narrators. He said: “He is a Haafith (a Haafith is the one who memorizes 100.000 Ahaadeeth), rendered trustworthy by Jazarah, but ‘Abdullaah ibn Ahmad regarded him as a liar.” Another scholar of Hadeeth said: “He used to fabricate Hadeeth.”

Also, it (the chain of narrators of this Hadeeth) includes ‘Abd-Al-Jabbaar ibn Waa’il ibn Hujr, about whom Al-Albaani said: “The experts of Hadeeth have agreed that he heard nothing from his father, nor was he born when his father was alive.” It also includes 'An'anah of Al-A‘amash and Abu Is’haaq (i.e. transmitting a Hadeeth saying "from so and so" without declaring their direct hearing from him, and since both of them are known for Tadlees, then their 'An'anah can be a disconnection in the chain of narrators).

To conclude, our advice to you, dear sister, is not to repeat “‘Aameen” except when a supplication is repeated.

Allaah Knows best.
