The meanings of the 'best names' of Allaah
Fatwa No: 1799

Question

Could you give me some information about the 'best names' of Allaah?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The 'best  names' of Allaah The Almighty refer to  His absolutely perfect attributes which are exalted above any aspect of deficiency.  Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And to Allaah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them.} [Quran 7:180]  We, in turn, believe in every name that Allaah The Almighty names Himself with,  or the Prophet , named him by. Muslims confirm and acknowledge every name attributed to Allaah The Almighty that is mentioned in the Quran or was stated by the Prophet . In addition,  there are  names of Allaah The Almighty that we do not know; the Prophet used to state in his supplications: "O Allaah! I ask You by every name that You called Yourself, or mentioned in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept hidden in Your knowledge of the Unseen, to make the Quran a delight for my heart, a light in my chest, a remover of my sadness and an alleviator of my anguish and worries." [Ahmad and Ibn Hibbaan]

Some scholars are of the view that the names of Allaah The Almighty refer to whatever refers to Him with all His most perfect attributes, such as the All Powerful, the Omniscient and the Wise.

Allaah Knows best.
