Question

Assalaamualaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. Please provide me with the hadith that states that when one completes reciting The Quran, that one should start reciting The Quran from the beginning again. Jazakallahu khayran. Thank you.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

At-Tirmithi reported in his Sunan that Ibn ‘Abbaas narrated that a man said: “O Messenger of Allaah, what is the best of all deeds?” He said: “Al-Haall Al-Murtahil [roughly, to be constantly on the go].” The man said: “What is 'Al-Haall Al-Murtahil’?” He said: “Traveling through the Quran from beginning to end, and from end to beginning.” This Hadeeth is classified by Shaykh Al-Albaani as Dha’eef (weak).

A group of scholars cited this Hadeeth as evidence that after completing a recitation of the entire Quran, it is desirable to start a second recitation of the Quran immediately. One should thus recite Soorah Al-Faatihah and the beginning of Soorah Al-Baqarah until the saying of Allaah (which means): {... and it is those who are the successful.} [Quran 2:5] By doing that, he would be 'constantly on the go’.

Allaah Knows best.
