Fatwa No: 2634

Question

Is the attribute of silence an attribute of Allaah The Almighty?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Being silent is an attribute ascribed to Allaah The Almighty, which is confirmed through the authentic Sunnah and consensus of the scholars. In a Hadeeth on the authority of Abu'd-Dardaa' the Prophet , mentioned that the lawful things are what Allaah The Almighty made lawful in His Book [Quran], and the prohibited things are what Allaah The Almighty prohibited in His Book. The things He kept silent about will be pardonable by Him. [Al-Haakim: Saheeh (Authentic), Ath-Thahabi agreed with him]

In a Hadeeth on the authority of Abu Tha‘labah, the Prophet mentioned that Allaah The Almighty kept silent about specific things out of His mercy and not because He forgot them. [Al-Haakim & At-Tabaraani in Al-Kabeer]  Imaam Ibn Khuzaymah stated that Allaah The Almighty speaks whenever He wills to speak and remains silent whenever He wills.

Shaykh Al-Islam, Ibn Taymiyyah stated that the attribute of being silent on the part of Allaah The Almighty is affirmed by the Sunnah and the consensus of the scholars. It has two meanings: that Allaah The Almighty remains silent if He wills or that He remains silent on informing others of His words or revealing them (meaning that He makes no mention about them).

In conclusion, being silent is an attribute affirmed to Allaah The Almighty in a manner that suits His Majesty. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.} [Quran 42:11] He speaks whenever He wills and remains silent whenever He wills.

Allaah Knows best.
