Question

Is the story of the interviewing of iblis authentic? He explains all of his friends and enemies his strength and weaknesses and he is wearing a colorful hat and belt.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

We do not know this story to which you are referring in the question. If you mean the long report about a dialogue between the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and the Accursed Satan where the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, asked him about what he likes and what he hates and he answered him, then this report is fabricated and false; it is impermissible to circulate it except for the purpose of warning people and underlining that it is fabricated and false.

We wish to warn of the gravity of attributing false and fabricated reports to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Al-Mugheerah narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "Ascribing false things to me is not like ascribing false things to anyone else; whoever tells a lie against me intentionally, then surely let him occupy his seat in Hellfire." [Al-Bukhari]

‘Ali reported that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "Whoever narrates a Hadeeth from me thinking it to be false, then he is one of the two liars." [Ahmad and Ibn Maajah]

An-Nawawi wrote: "As for the rulings derived from the Hadeeth, it is obvious; in it is a stern warning against lying and engaging in it, and that whoever relates something he believes to be probably false, is a liar. How would he not be considered a liar when he is relating what is false?"

Allaah Knows best.
