Unlawful money must be disposed of
Fatwa No: 292000

Question

In Fatwa No : 90152 u said that it is ok to keep haram money but only if u r poor. I am 17, living with my parent, got no job, and would be poor if I didn't have my parents and I also have haram money which is mixed with my halal money. Is it permissible for me to keep the haram money?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ʻalayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

As long as your father provides for you, you do not have the right to use this unlawful money. Rather, it is incumbent on you to dispose of it by giving it to the poor and the needy or spending it on the general interests of Muslims. The fact that the unlawful money is mixed with lawful money is not a valid reason for not disposing of it; you should dispose of the unlawful money and the rest of your money is lawful to you. If you do not know the exact amount of the unlawful money, you should try to estimate it to the best of your ability and dispose of a sum of money that you believe would most likely clear your liability.

Allaah Knows best.
