Non-Muslim colleague joking about Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam
Fatwa No: 359614

Question

Assalaamu alaykum. If a non-Muslim colleague makes a joke about the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, (I ask Allah's forgiveness), would it be wrong to hate what they said, ignore their comment, and change the subject but continue laughing and joking about other (permissible) things for the sake of the team and then avoid them once the teamwork is done? Thank you.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

You are obliged to be jealous regarding the sanctity of the Prophet and not allow anyone to joke about him, no matter who they might be.

So if your team makes such jokes, then tell them firmly that this is the Messenger of Allah in whom you believe, and that they must believe in his message to all creation, and you should not allow them to mock him or make jokes about his person.

We give you an example: if the one joked about is your father or your mother, what would you do? Indeed, the Messenger of Allah is worthier of your jealousy regarding his honor, and of striving to prevent any insult that would undermine his honorable person. If they do not stop this, then leave this team and look for another disciplined team to work with.

Allah knows best.
