Zakat on honey: the ruling and the amount
Fatwa No: 37184

Question

How should I pay the zakat on honey? Please clarify this by taking into account the difference between the species of bees and categories of honey.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

Scholars differed concerning the zakat of honey. Imaam Abu Haneefah and Imaam Ahmad held the opinion that zakat is due on honey. The Hanbali scholars had the opinion that the Nisaab of honey is ten Faraqs; each Faraq consists of sixteen Iraqi pounds, which is four-hundred and seventy grams. So the Nisaab of honey is about 75.2 kg. The Hanafi scholars opined that zakat is obligatory on any amount of honey. The two schools agree that the amount of Zakat is one-tenth of the entire sum.

Allaah Knows best.
