Question

Assalam alaykum, I would like to know the meaning of the name Qaylah. The name of a sahabiya, also the name of Qaylah bint amr wife of Hashim ibn 'abd manaf great-grandfather of the Prophet. Can I name my daughter Qaylah?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

It is permissible for you to name your daughter Qaylah, because it is a name that was well-known among the Arabs, as the mother’s name of the supporters of the Prophet (Al-Aws and al-Khazraj) was Qaylah.

The book entitled as-Seerah authored by Ibn Hisham reads:

The family lineage of Qaylah: She is the daughter of Kahil ibn ‘Udhrah ibn Qudha’ah, the mother of Al-Aws and Al-Khazraj.” [End of quote – Abridged]

Allah knows best.
