How to Discard Word “Deen” That Is Part of Some Names of Muslims
Fatwa No: 474502

Question

Im somewhat familiar with the rulings on handling paper with names of the Prophets and the Names of Allah. Some Muslims have the word “Deen” as a part of their name. If I have a paper with their name in english, can i discard it in the garbage can like i do with most papers or should I take other measures?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

The names that are glorified in Sharia must be respected and it is not permissible to despise them.

Al-Haytami said in his Fatawa: “The Quran and every name that is glorified such as the name of Allah or the name of a Prophet of Allah, must be respected, revered and glorified.” [End of quote]

The word ‘Deen’ (religion), which is meant the religion of Islam, is one of the things that are glorified by Sharia; and therefore, it is not permissible to despise the papers containing the word religion that is meant the religion of Islam – even if they are written in a language other than Arabic – by throwing them in the garbage. Rather, they should be disposed in a way that does not despise them, by burning them, obliterating them, washing them, or burying them. As for the mere word religion that is not meant Islam, then it is not obligatory to respect it.

For more benefit on burning or burying the Quran or something on which the name of Allah is written, please refer to Fatawa 367540, 237064, 89853 and 37422.

Allah knows best.
