Works in Dispatching Halal Goods but Indirectly Assists in Riba
Fatwa No: 514822

Question

Assalamu alaykum. I work as a truck dispatcher in a company that only deals with halal goods. However, the company uses a factoring service that involves riba to receive payments. My job is only to dispatch halal loads and submit documents to the accounting team. Is it permissible for me to continue working in this company?” I have doubt because we are submitting the documents into the accounting and accounting team are doing riba by using this documents? Am I not sinful of continuing this job?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

If the documents submitted to the accounting team have nothing to do with usurious financing, but rather are for documenting Halal (lawful) goods and shipments - which is what appears to be the case - then there is nothing wrong with your work in submitting those documents, even if the accounting team may use them for the mentioned financing, because this assistance is neither direct nor intended, so it is not forbidden.

However, if the documents are requested for the sake of usurious financing that cannot be completed without them, it is forbidden to submit them in that case due to the prohibition of cooperating in sin, as Allah Almighty says (what means):{...Cooperate with one another in goodness and righteousness, and do not cooperate in sin and transgression...} [Quran 5:2].

Lastly, if a person limits themselves to what is permissible in that company, such that they do not engage in anything forbidden, nor directly or intentionally assist in it, then there is no harm in working there. Otherwise, it is impermissible.

Allah knows best.
