Fatwa No: 516670

Question

Assalamu Alaikum. I would like to name my daughter “Khairin Hoor.” “Khairin” means goodness (from the Arabic ‘khair’), and “Hoor” refers to the maidens of Paradise. Is this a permissible and appropriate name in Islam?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

There is no harm in naming your daughter with this name. Generally speaking, it is recommended in Islam that parents choose names that do not carry bad meanings and do not imply self-praise. Rather, they should choose names that are familiar and easy to live with, so the children do not feel embarrassed by them when they grow up, and the names should possess similar qualities that are among the characteristics of a good name.

Ibn Qudāmah said in Al-Mughnī: “It is recommended to choose a good name, as it has been reported from the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, that he said: ‘You will be called on the Day of Judgement by your names and the names of your fathers, so choose good names.’ And He, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, also said: ‘The most beloved names to Allah are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman.’” [A Saheeh [sound] Hadith]

Allah knows best.
