Quranic amulets and paying for Ruqyah
Fatwa No: 6029

Question

I have suffered more than one miscarriage, in these circumstances is it permissible for me to wear a Quranic amulet throughout my pregnancy?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

There is no doubt that the Quran is a cure for both the body and the soul. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And We send down of the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.}[Quran 17:82]

To gain protection from Satan, satanic whispers, evil eye and magic spells, a Muslim should observe Athkaar (remembrance) and authentic supplications narrated on the authority of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Other features of an effective Ruqyah is to recite Ayat Al-Kursi, Soorat Al-Falaq, Soorat An-Naas and the last two verses of Soorat Al-Baqarah. A righteous person can perform Ruqyah, but never a magician  or conjurer, who must be avoided.

For the Ruqyah to be effective, the one who makes it and the one who receives it must perform the daily prayers. That is because many people who are possessed and women suffering miscarriages often do not pray properly and do not maintain ritual purity, perhaps they also commit sinful acts. Therefore, how can Ruqyah be effective while there are such violations?

For this reason, you should pray at the due times, fulfill the obligations and abstain from doing prohibited acts. Doing so in addition to reciting morning and evening Athkaar and the other supplications, such as when leaving or entering the house, will protect the pregnancy from the machinations of Satan and the Jinn – Allaah willing.

Do you mean by a Quranic amulet what is written on a piece of paper, which is folded in a cloth or a piece of leather, and worn?  Scholars have different opinions about using a Quranic amulet. Most of them agree that it is impermissible. This is according to Ibn Mas‘ood and Ibn ‘Abbaas ; and according to the apparent meaning of statements made by Huthayfah and ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Aaamir .

The reasons behind it being impermissible are:

1.        The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, was reported to have said that enchantments and amulets were acts of Shirk (polytheism). [Ahmad and Abu Daawood]

2.        To prevent wearing something that is not from the Quran.

3.        The Quranic amulet is worn it is likely to be in the bathroom and other such places.

Consequently, we advise you to increase your remembrance of  Allaah The Almighty, ask Him for forgiveness, supplicate and do acts of worship and you will get what you wish for, Allaah willing.

It is permissible to pay a Shaykh (religious scholar) to perform Ruqyah. Abu Sa‘eed Al-Khudri recited Soorah Al-Faatihah as a Ruqyah and someone paid him for it. Abu Sa‘eed accepted the payment and told the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, about the matter and he approved it. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Ibn Taymiyyah inferred evidence from this Hadeeth that it is permissible to receive remuneration for performing Ruqyah.

In conclusion, it is permissible to be paid to perform Ruqyah, as long as it is effective and complies with the Sunnah (tradition).

And Allaah Knows best.
