New Muslim Woman Seeking Guardian (Wali)
Fatwa No: 82491

Question

I am a new convert (alhamdulillah) and I need advice on how to go about getting a Wali.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, it is an obligation on whoever becomes a Muslim in a non-Muslim country to migrate to a Muslim country or at least to a country where there are Muslims who perform their acts of worship and rituals, especially if he/she does not know the religious obligations which he/she is obliged to perform.

Jareer Ibn ‘Abdullaah narrated that the Prophet said: “I am free from any Muslim who lives among the polytheist.” [Abu Dawood and At-Tirmithi]

If the new Muslim lives in a Muslim country and he/she does not have a close Muslim relative who can be his/her guardian, then the judge is his/her responsible and guardian in Muslim countries. If he/she is in a non-Muslim country, then it is the Islamic Centers or Muslim organizations which are considered as her/his guardian.

Praise be to Allah, such Centers and organizations are found almost all over the world, and they look after the matters of the Muslims. Allah Says (what means): {The believing men and believing women are allies of one another.} [Quran 9: 71]

Allah knows best.
