Loving God
Fatwa No: 84693

Question

How can we love God? I mean what can I do?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

The love of Allaah is the soul of Eemaan (belief). So, any deed which is empty of this love is like a body without a soul. So, if the tree of love is planted in the heart and watered with sincerity and faithfulness to the beloved, it will give all kinds of good fruit and it will continue to do so by the Will of Allaah.

As for the matters that make this love obvious they are ten:

1.     Reading the Quran attentively thinking about its meanings.

2.    Trying to get closer to Allaah by multiplying Nawaafil (supererogatory acts of worship).

3.    Remembering Allaah in all circumstances with ones tongue, heart, deeds and state.

4.    Studying Allaah's Names and Attributes until knowing them thoroughly since whoever knows Allaah by His Names, Attributes and Deeds, will love him devotedly.

5.     Favoring what Allaah likes above what your soul is attracted to.

6.    Watching and perceiving Allaah's Benevolence and Kindness, and the apparent and hidden ease and comfort He bestows on us.

7.    Having a completely broken heart when one is worshipping Allaah.

8.    Being alone with Allaah during the last third of the night supplicating Him, reading the Quran, being polite and modest as any servant should be before his Lord and seeking Allaah’s Forgiveness as much as possible and repenting to Allaah.

9.     Keeping company with those who sincerely and truly love Allaah.

10. Staying away from anything that could hinder the heart from remembering Allaah.

Those who applied these ten matters in their lives reached the status of lovers of Allaah. There are two matters that lead to doing these matters; firstly, the readiness of the soul for this, and, secondly, the clarity of vision.

Allaah is indeed The One Who leads to doing good.

Allaah Knows best.
