Question

Here in Rwanda we want to know when Ramadan begins?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

The beginning of the month of Ramadan is known by sighting the crescent – in Rwanda or any other place. If the crescent is not seen on 29th of Sha'baan, then the month of Ramadan would start after completing thirty days of Sha'baan. The Prophet said: “When you see the crescent, observe the fast, and when you see it (again) then break the fast, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then complete thirty days for the month of Sha'baan.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Therefore, people in each country should make certain that the crescent was indeed sighted. If the crescent cannot be seen in their area, they should inquire of neighboring countries. If it is not seen even in the neighboring countries, then they should complete thirty days for the month of Sha'baan.

This year Ramadan has begun on Wednesday 06/11/2002 A.C. in most countries.

Allah knows best.
