Can a Muslim Woman Be a Singer?
Fatwa No: 85410

Question

I would like to ask your opinion about female Muslim singers who sing pop, sentimental songs. Is it permissible in Islam to pursue this type of career? Thank you very much for your kind attention to my questions. May Allah continue to bless all of you.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

The ruling of singing varies depending on the nature of the singing and to whom it is addressed. Any singing that is accompanied by musical instruments is forbidden even if it is religious or emotional or national in origin. If the singing is free from musical accompaniment but it is done in the presence of men, then it is also forbidden.

Singing as a profession means singing in the theaters, TV studios etc., and taping those songs to be broadcasted and distributed among the people. In fact, it is an abominable act, a great sin, and a source of evil. No one who fears Allah would dare to do so.

Moreover, erotic poems and songs that contain vulgarity and shamelessness are forbidden even if one sings for herself or among her Mahaarim (unmarriageable relations).

Allah knows best.
