Fatwa CenterRuling on AI-Generated Melodies Derived from Music
Question
Assalamu 3alaykum. Context: In my free time, I mod games so they can be halal to play with my siblings by removing any impermissible things inside the game. I use AI tools to convert the music (haram) from the game into male humming noise instead, it still keeps the melody but there is no instruments nor female voices, just melodic humming male noise (needed for rythm games). Question: It is permissible to listen to this AI generated melody converted from music? Baarakallahu fiikum
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad 
is His slave and Messenger.
As for the sounds of musical instruments—such as the flute, lute, piano, and similar instruments, with the exception of the duff—they are prohibited according to the majority of scholars. This is based on the statement of the Prophet ﷺ: “There will certainly be among my Ummah people who will deem lawful illicit sexual relations, silk, wine, and musical instruments.” (Narrated by al-Bukhārī in a muʿallaq form.)
As for melodies generated through technological means, the fatwa we issue is that if they are melodious and resemble the sounds produced by prohibited musical instruments, then it is not permissible to generate them nor to listen to them.
It is stated in the Kuwaiti Encyclopedia of Islamic Jurisprudence:
“If sounds are produced by inanimate objects on their own or through the action of the wind, no scholar is known to have held that listening to such sounds is prohibited. However, if the sounds are produced through human action, then they fall into one of two categories:
1) Sounds that are neither rhythmically ordered nor melodious, such as the sound of a blacksmith striking iron, the sound of a carpenter’s saw, and similar noises. No scholar is known to have prohibited listening to such sounds.
2) Sounds that are produced from instruments through human action in a rhythmic and melodious manner. This is what is termed music.” [End quote.]
