Bank deposits and credit cards

Question

I am a young man and just started to work in an organization. Can I put my money in the bank and use a credit card?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

You commit no sin if you put your money in a bank that deals with Riba (interest and/or usury) if you cannot find an Islamic bank. Since this permission is for necessity, you should not put your money in a savings account if you can do so in a credit account. If the necessity, however, causes you to use a savings account, it is unlawful for you to take the interest for your personal benefit. You can only take it and spend it in the general interest of the Muslims with the intention of getting rid of Riba. As for credit cards, the Islamic Jurisprudence council had ruled that they should not be used if they entail Riba, but if they are free of interest, then they could be obtained.

Allaah Knows best.
