Do You Prostrate Every Time You Repeat Sajdah Verse?
Fatwa No: 86425

Question

When you are memorizing Qur'an and there is a Sajdah Ayah do you have to do Sajdah whenever you repeat the Ayah to memorize it?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

It is Sunnah for the person who recites a verse of Sajdah (the prostration of recitation of the Quran) – while praying or outside the prayer to prostrate. But if he/she does not do so, they do not commit a sin; rather, they miss the reward. This is the opinion of the majority of scholars and it is the most preponderant opinion according to evidence. However, the Hanafi School of jurisprudence holds the view that such a prostration is obligatory.

Anyway, do we prostrate every time we repeat the same verse of prostration while in the same place or is one prostration sufficient?

The Hanafi School of jurisprudence that holds the view that the prostration for the recitation of the Quran is obligatory, states that it does not become obligatory when the same verse is repeated unless the person moves from the place where he first read that verse or in case of recitation or while listening. So, if the person recites the same verse where there is prostration for the recitation many times in the same place, one prostration is sufficient for him.

The Shaafi'i School of jurisprudence holds three different opinions about this issue; the most sound among them is that the person should prostrate a second time for the repetition of the reason for prostration. This is the best opinion.

An-Nawawi said: “If the person recites the verses where there is prostration for the recitation in the same place, he prostrates at each verse. If he repeats the same verse in the same place, he prostrates once for all of them if he had not prostrated the first time he recited the verse. Otherwise, he prostrates a second time for the renewal of the reason. This is the opinion of Maalik and Ahmad . The Maaliki scholars exclude the teacher and the pupil from this ruling. These prostrate only once according to them.
