Wife wears vagina ring to avoid having more children
Fatwa No: 88587

Question

This is regarding my friend and his wife, both are Muslim but from two different countries. After having their second baby, his wife went to visit her parents for about three months. When she came back she surprised him. She had a vagina ring! He asked her why? And why without telling him? Then she started giving excuses such as she wants to have more time to take care more on the kids. This event now took place more than three and half years and every time he asks her to remove it, She keeps delaying and last time she told him that she wants the second baby to reach an age of five, meaning another 1.5 year and god knows what other excuses she will come with at that time. He wants to know the opinion of Shariah on what she did, and weather she has the right keeping delaying from having a third child. He feels angry from inside.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

Procreation is one of the basic aims of marriage in Islam.  This is the sound right of both a husband and his wife.  Hence, no one may delay it unless the other spouse approves the delay.

This woman committed two mistakes.

First, she fixed the spiral in her vagina which is not allowed except if there is any dire necessity, because the operation itself leads to many prohibitions like uncovering the very private parts which is not allowed in normal circumstances.

Second, she undertook the action without the permission of her husband.

Now, she has to make sincere repentance along with asking forgiveness from her husband for violating his rights and she has to obey her husband by removing the spiral.  In this case, she has to consult a Muslim female doctor first; if one is not available then to a non-Muslim female doctor, and then to a Muslim male doctor. If he is not available then she may consult any available doctor.  The steps mentioned are only to avoid prohibitions as much as possible.

If the woman insists on disobeying her husband then she is a disobedient wife.  To correct her, the husband should follow the steps that are laid down by Allaah. He should advise her first, warn her against Allaah's Anger, if she persists in her refusal, he should refrain from sleeping with her. If this does not yield any good results, then he may beat her lightly if it is useful. Despite all the above steps if she still insists on disobeying her husband then he may divorce her.

Allaah knows best.
