Taking usurious loan to achieve lawful purposes
Fatwa No: 91170

Question

Is there any good day to be scheduled for marriage? Or it is a sin to ask questions like this. How about the position of the head of the bed or the position of our head (example, to Qiblah, etc.). When sleeping anytime especially at nigh (its good and bad positions)? Is the money taken from loan (with interest from the bank) to be given as dory is Haraam? Is it called Ribaa? And is it Haraam to take a loan like this? Is it Haraam for business or for buying a house?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds.  I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

We have said in Fatwa 84130 "There is no harm in marrying at any time and any place except if there is any lawful reason, such as being in the state of Ihraam or in 'Iddah (waiting period of a woman after divorce or the death of her husband).

Therefore, the belief that marrying during certain period is not permissible, or observing an evil omen in a specific period are not-Islamic and belong to the pre-Islamic period."  See also Fatwa 83678.

As for stretching out one's feet towards Qiblah read Fatwa 82233.

Taking or giving loans with interest is among the major great sins.  One should not deal with interest based transaction for any purpose.  So, one should repent from taking interest-based loan and should get rid of such a loan as soon as possible.  Though it is a grave sin to borrow an interest-based loan, yet you may use the money if you got it as your dowry as we stated in Fatwa 89710: "When one gets the loan, it becomes his property and it is a debt on him, whether it is an interest-based loan or otherwise; however, one is sinful for getting an interest-based loan".

Allaah Knows best.
