The Ansaarís Reception of the Messenger of Allah

Sunday 28/03/2010

When the Muslims in Madeenah heard that the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) had set out from Makkah on his way to Madeenah, they would go every morning to Al-Harrah in expectation of his arrival and remain there until the heat of noon time would compel them to return. One day, after a long wait, they returned home. No sooner had they entered their homes than a Jew climbed up on the roof of one of their forts to look at something, and behold! He saw the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and his Companions in their white clothes, emerging from the desert mirage. The Jew could not help crying at the top of his voice, “O company of Arabs! This is your great fortune [man] for which you have been waiting.”

The Muslims rushed to take up their arms and went to receive the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) in the summit of Al-Harrah, and he turned with them rightwards, until he alighted in the quarters of the Banu ‘Amr bin ‘Awf. This was on a Monday in the month of Rabee‘ Al-Awwal. Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, stood up to receive the people while the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) sat and kept silent. Those among the Ansaar (helpers in Madeenah), who had not seen the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) before, started to salute Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, (thinking him to be the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) ) until the sun troubled the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). Thereupon Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, turned to shade him with his garment. Hence, people came to know who the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was.

The Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) spent over ten nights in the quarters of the Banu ‘Amr bin ‘Awf, during which he built the mosque of Qubaa’ that was established on piety, in which the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) prayed, and then rode his mount and left. [Saheeh Al-Bukhari]

After the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) had stayed in Qubaa’, he intended to enter Madeenah, hence, he sent for the Ansaar, who came to him and Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and greeted them with peace. They said to them, “Ride safely and you will be obeyed!” The Prophet of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, rode and proceeded while the Ansaar who were carrying their arms surrounded them.

On his arrival in Madeenah, its inhabitants constantly repeated, “The Prophet of Allah has come! The Prophet of Allah has come!” They came out and were eagerly looking and saying, “The Prophet of Allah has come! The Prophet of Allah has come”!

It was a happy and cheerful day the like of which Madeenah had never witnessed before. The people put on their best clothes as if they were having a day of feast - and it was really a day of feast for it was the day in which Islam moved from the narrowness of the confinement of Makkah to the immensity of initiation and spread in that blessed area of Madeenah and from there to all parts of the earth.

The inhabitants of Madeenah felt the great favor and honor that was especially granted to them by Allah The Almighty. Their town had become a place of shelter for the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and his emigrating Companions and then the place that supported Islam. Furthermore, it became a place for the general system of Islam, with its details and components. Hence, the inhabitants of Madeenah came out cheering with gladness and joy, saying, “O Messenger of Allah! O Muhammad! O Messenger of Allah!” It was narrated that when the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) entered Madeenah, men and women climbed up the house-tops, and boys and servants were scattered in the streets, cheering, “O Muhammad! O Messenger of Allah! O Muhammad! O Messenger of Allah!” [Muslim]

After this momentous mass reception, the like of which human history has never seen, the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) proceeded until he alighted as a guest in the house of Abu Ayyoob Al-Ansaari, may Allah be pleased with him. In a Hadeeth on the authority of Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, he said

The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) continued till he alighted near the house of Abu Ayyoob, may Allah be pleased with him. While the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was speaking with the family members of Abu Ayyoob, may Allah be pleased with him, ‘Abdullaah bin Salaam, may Allah be pleased with him, [who was a Jew at that time] heard the news of his arrival while he himself was picking dates for his family from his garden. He hurried to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) carrying the dates, which he had collected for his family from the garden. He listened to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and then went home. Then the Prophet of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Which is the nearest of the house to one of our kin” Abu Ayyoob, may Allah be pleased with him, replied, “Mine, O Prophet of Allah. This is my house and this is my gate.” The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said, “Go and prepare a place for our midday rest.” [Al-Bukhari] Thus, the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) stayed in the house of Abu Ayyoob, may Allah be pleased with him, until his mosque and dwelling places were built.

In this way, the migration of the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and his Companions was complete. However, the aims and objectives of the emigration did not come to end: on the contrary, they started just at the very moment that the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) arrived in Madeenah safely, and with those began the journey of troubles, difficulties and challenges that the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) overcame on his way to achieve the outstanding future of the Islamic nation and state. It is that state which was able to create a wonderful human civilization based on faith, piety, goodness and justice, after it had defeated the only superpowers of that time – that of the Persian and Roman Empires.
