Do you love the Prophet?

Tuesday 30/03/2010

Allah The Almighty favored His Prophet, Muhammad, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), with many unique characteristics: he is the master of all mankind, the last of the prophets and was sent to all people. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {Say, [O Muhammad]: ‘O mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you all’} [Quran 7:158]

Undoubtedly, we have many duties towards the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), which we must perform. We have to trust his reports, obey his orders and abstain from whatever he forbade.

We also have to perfect our love for him in terms of our belief, speech and actions, and give it precedence over our love for our own selves, children and parents, as the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), said: “None of you truly believe until he loves me more than his children, parents and all the people.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

It is obvious that anyone who loves anything gives it precedence and followsits guidance otherwise, he is being untruthful and merely professing loyalty. The signs of love for the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), will show on anyone who truly and sincerely loves him.

Here we present to our dear readers, the signs that indicate one's love for the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ):

- The first sign is imitating him, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), adhering to his Sunnah, following his sayings and deeds, obeying him, abstaining from all that he prohibited and observing his etiquettes in all affairs, as well as all that pertains to his manners at times when he has wealth or is in need of money, and at times of activity and stillness. The Quranic evidence on this is the verses that Say (what means):

- {Say, [O Muhammad]: ‘If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.’} [Quran 3:31]

- {There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.} [Quran 33:21]

As for the Prophetic evidence on the signs of his love, it is the Hadeeth where the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), said: “None of you [truly] believe until his desires are subservient to what I came with.” An-Nawawi may Allaah have mercy upon him considered this Hadeeth as authentic in his collection of forty Prophetic Hadeeths. However, other scholars considered it as weak.

- Mentioning him often and yearning to see him, for if anyone loves someone, he mentions his loved one frequently and longs to meet him. Ibn Al-Qayyim may Allaah have mercy upon him said, "When there is frequent mention of the beloved, recalling one's love for him, and recalling his merits and characteristics that cause love for him, then this love will increase and yearning for the beloved will overpower the heart."

- Another sign of loving the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), is conferring due praises and compliments to him, the most eloquent of which is what Allah The Almighty praised him with and what he himself praised himself with. The best of this is asking Allah The Almighty to confer peace and blessings upon him, which is ordered and stressed by Allah The Almighty, in the verse that Says (what means): {Indeed, Allah Confers Blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to Confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah To Grant him] peace.} [Quran 33:56]

This verse contains a Divine order to invoke peace and blessings upon the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). Therefore, the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), said: “The stingy person is the one before whom I am mentioned and he does not ask Allah to confer peace upon me.” [At-Tirmithi]

-Another sign of loving the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), is relying on his Sunnah for judgment. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muhammad], judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission.} [Quran 4:65]

- Also, a Muslim shows his love for the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), when he loves those who loved him from his household and Companions, both Al-Muhaajiroon (the emigrants) and Al-Ansaar, (the helpers) by defending them, following their guidance and taking them as role models. This love is also shown through hating, showing enmity and insulting those who hate and show enmity towards them.

- A distinctive feature of anyone who loves the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), is defining his Sunnah: protecting it against the plagiarism of the falsifiers, distortions of the exaggerators, interpretations of the ignorant, and refuting the malicious allegations of atheists and transgressors as well as exposing their lies.

- Another sign of one's love and respect for the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), is mentioning his name with his prophethood or the relevant appellations that are attached to it, such as Prophet of Allah, Messenger of Allah and the like. Also, asking Allah The Almighty to confer His peace upon him when mentioning his name, and frequently doing so at recommended times and highlighting one's love for the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ).

- The spreading and conveying of his Sunnah and educating people about it is a sign of one’s love for him, as the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), said: “Proclaim even one verse on my authority.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Dear reader, it is now your duty to contemplate, perfect and glorify these signs. Know that love is not chants to be sung, poems to be recited or mere words to be uttered. Rather, love is to obey Allah The Almighty and His Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), and to act in accordance with this love by following, adhering to and taking him as a role model. May Allah The Almighty help our brothers and sisters to adhere to the Sunnah of the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), as long as we live.
