Water Flows From the his Fingers

Wednesday 07/04/2010

Water is a great blessing which Allah The Almighty has granted to His servants. Allah The Almighty sends it from the sky and valleys flow according to their capacity. He has deposited it on earth and formed through it springs and rivers. Allah The Almighty made water potable and made life dependant on it. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {And We made from water every living thing. Then will they not believe?}[Quran 21:30]

Taking into consideration that the springing of water from the earth is a sign (proving the greatness of Allah), and that its springing from hard stones is a greater sign, what would the situation be if it were to flow from somebody’s fingers? That would surely be a miracle and a supernatural event!

Water flowed from among the fingers of the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), as a miracle that Allah The Almighty granted him. It occurred many times, on different occasions. The Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, witnessed it and clearly reported this to us.

One of these incidents took place on the day of Al-Hudaybiyyah. Jaabir ibn ‘Abdullaah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “People were very thirsty on the day of Al-Hudaybiyyah. There was a leather utensil in front of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) who began to perform ablution. People rushed towards him. He asked:'What is the matter?' They said, 'We have no water for ablution and drinking except what is in front of you.' The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) put his hand in the utensil and water started to flow from among his fingers like springs. We drank and made ablution. I asked, 'How many were you?' He said, 'If we were one hundred thousand, it would suffice us. We were fifteen hundred.'" [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] This wording is narrated by Al-Bukhari may Allaah have mercy upon him.

Another incident took place in Az-Zawraa', a place in Madeenah next to the market. Anas ibn Maalik, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "A utensil was brought to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) while he was in Az-Zawraa'. He put his hand in it, and water started to spring from between his fingers. People consequently made ablution. Qataadah, may Allah be pleased with him, asked Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, 'How many were you?' He said, 'Three hundred, or nearly three hundred.'" [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] This wording is narrated by Al-Bukhari may Allaah have mercy upon him.

A third incident happened when water became scarce while the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), and the Companions were on a journey. ‘Abdullaah ibn Mas‘ood, may Allah be pleased with him, said,“We would consider the signs [miracles and supernatural events] as blessings while you [people] consider [all of] them as a warning. We were once on a journey with the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and we ran out of water. He said:‘Bring the water remaining with you!’ People brought a utensil containing a little water. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) placed his hand in the utensil and said: 'Come to the blessed water, and the blessing is from Allah.'Indeed, I saw water springing from among the fingers of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). Also we would listen to the food exalting Allah while it was being eaten [by him]." [Muslim]

This Prophetic miracle was clear evidence of the divine support that Allah The Almighty granted to His Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). This and other miracles had a great effect on enhancing the Companions' faith and consolidating their relations with Allah The Almighty, especially because they faced difficult conditions due to their struggle with the people of falsehood including the disbelievers, the Jews and the hypocrites. Such miracles supported them and increased their faith, affected the disbelievers and the stubborn, and drew attention to the fact that Allah The Almighty is the Mighty and the Powerful who is able to do anything on earth or in the sky.
