Question

assalmu 3alaikum wara7matullahe wa barakatuhu
i have recently been asked to consider a muslim man for marriage. This person is known to have a good character but my problem is that he works as a bank manager in the uk, managing non islamic banks. My limited knowledge is that his source of income is not halal and hence i should not even consider him at all, but some one suggested that i meet him first and then take things further as they come..
i would grately appreciate your input. Jazakummullahu khairan

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Working in banks that deal with Riba (interest and/or usury) is not permissible as this is helping in the consumption of Riba; this is clarified in Fataawa 83763 and 81944. Therefore, this man is obliged to repent to Allaah and leave this job. He should be advised about this in a soft and good manner as he might repent to Allaah. If he repents and he is religious and has a good moral conduct, then you should accept him as a husband. The Prophet said: “If a man whose religion and moral character are pleasing to you proposes to you, then let him marry.” [At-Tirmithi] However, if he insists on doing this job, then he is considered a dissolute person; in which case, you should not accept him as a husband.

‘Ulaysh from the Maaliki School of jurisprudence, said: “Ibn Rahhaal considers that the preponderant opinion is that it is forbidden in principle to marry off a woman to a dissolute person even if he is trustworthy, and she and her guardian should not accept him and this is obvious, as it is forbidden to socialize with a dissolute person and it is religiously an obligation to desert him, let alone marrying off a girl to him.”

Finally, it should be noted that this man is a non-Mahram to you until he conducts the marriage contract with you, so you are not permitted to deal with him except according to Sharee’ah regulations, so you are not permitted to go out with him or be in seclusion with him and so forth.

Allaah Knows best.
